She picked up a spiral conch shell and held its flared pink crevice to her ear. The noise around her drowned and dissolved into a gentle lapping of waves.

She was in a skiff, floating on the sea, her hand immersed in the water feeling the cold swirling ripples. Her face aglow with a soft golden hue emanating from the slice of the tangerine sun rising from the ocean. The bluish-grey hills on the shore were curtained off by a thin wall of mist.

“Mom!” A familiar voice reached her ears.

“Lost in a daydream again? We haven’t seen the entire aquarium yet.”

  1. I adore the role reversal in this story. Often it’s mom calling the kids out of daydreams, so having the child call her mom out of a daydream is really refreshing. I enjoyed the descriptive writing too. The fact that the swirling ripples of the sea were cold shows that you really immersed yourself in the mom’s fantasy. Well done!

    1. Hi Richa, how are you. I am so sorry for disappearing like this. I am feeling a bit under the weather, therefore, not being able to write anything lately; besides, the festive season is on and there are other commitments that have kept me pre-occupied in the last few weeks. It’s really very sweet of you to check on me like this, I felt special. Thank you 🙂
